How to Spot an Authentic Aqeeq (Agate) Ring

5 October 2026 · 4 min read

Aqeeq — known in the West as agate — is one of the most beloved gemstones in the world, and especially in South Asia and the Middle East, where a deep red Yemeni aqeeq is treasured as a ring stone. Its banded patterns, warm glow and durability make it ideal for daily wear. But its popularity has a downside: the market is full of glass, dyed chalcedony and resin imitations.

Start with temperature. Natural agate feels cool to the touch and warms slowly in your hand, while glass and plastic reach body temperature almost immediately. Press the stone against your cheek or the back of your hand for a few seconds — a stone that heats up instantly deserves suspicion.

Look at the pattern under light. Real aqeeq shows irregular, organic banding and tiny natural inclusions; no two stones are identical. Perfectly uniform colour, repeating stripes or air bubbles caught under the surface are classic signs of glass. Dye is another common treatment: it pools in surface cracks as darker threads of colour, which a jeweller's loupe reveals quickly.

Feel the craftsmanship of the setting as well. An authentic aqeeq ring is not only about the stone — traditional pieces are hand-set in solid sterling silver, with the cabochon seated deeply and secured so it can withstand everyday wear. A paper-thin plated band or a glued-in stone suggests the whole piece was made for a souvenir stall, not a lifetime.

Finally, buy from someone who tells you the truth about treatments. Heat treatment is a longstanding, accepted practice for many agates, and we note it on the product page whenever it applies. Every aqeeq ring we sell is natural stone set in solid 925 silver — and if you ever have a question about a specific piece, message us directly from the ring page and we will answer personally.
